History Tropical Agriculture

Tropical Agriculture
Tropical Agriculture was the only plant related study that did not have a study association. The study was mostly meant for educating advisors and executives that would work in the colony Indonesia. However, after the Second World War Indonesia was decolonized, so the university discussed whether or not the study should continue to exist. This discussion sparked a focus shift of the study towards developing tropical countries. In 1988, after more than 70 years of education, the study ceased to exist, because: “A relatively small amount of graduates in a time of scarcity has huge consequences”. While most studies had experienced enormous growth that decade, tropical agriculture did not share that. The study was made into an orientation (minor) of the previously mentioned agriculture study. More info about Tropical Agriculture can be found in the booklet ‘Tropische Plantenteelt, Wageningen en de Wereld’, which is available online in the WUR library.
