In this column I, Lisa Kiel, the commissioner education, will inform you on all the relevant topics being discussed in the StudCie (study committee of Semper Florens) and the OpCie (program committee for the studies of Plant Sciences).
Wageningen Scientific Preparation Week
This year Plant Sciences held for the first time the Wageningen Scientific Preparation Week. It was meant to be given to all students that did not come from the bachelor. Because of the high registration of new masters, it was only given to the international students. The Wageningen Scientific Preparation Week was three days, which will be longer in following years. On the first day, they got a presentation from the library about information literacy and plagiarism. They also got information from the mathematics department about the benefits of statistics. The next day they were divided into two groups which had a theme of ecology or genetics. The ecology group got a presentation about data modelling and how to behave in greenhouses and on the field. The genetics group got a presentation about bioinformatics and on how to behave in the lab. The last day the students had to prepare a short presentation about themselves with a small discussion round at the end of each presentation.
The evaluation of the students was very positive to the absolute delight of Anja. Because of these positive reaction the Wageningen Scientific Preparation Week will also be held for the new students that will register in February.

Resits again but different
The university is thinking about putting a maximum on the amount of resits you can take. This will either be a maximum per course of a maximum per resit period. Lecturers would like it to be a maximum per course, because checking resits takes a lot of time, so having a maximum would get students more motivated to actually learn for their resits. After the allowed amount of resists for a course, you would have to follow the course again to try and pass it. This idea is still in its early stages, so not a lot of information about this is available yet.
